Palo Alto console settings: baud rate and the adapter nobody brings
PAN-OS uses 9600 8-N-1 with no flow control across PA-220, PA-400, PA-5000/7000 and Panorama M-series. The setting is never the problem. The usual field problem is physical: the console port is RJ45 but the appliance ships with a DB9/RJ45 adapter, and that adapter gets left in the previous rack.

Field notes
PA series hardware firewalls
Palo Alto Networks: console serial settings are 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control. Default console user is admin; first login prompts to set a password.
Panorama
Console settings are the same 9600-8-N-1 as the firewalls. Use serial console for initial M-Series configuration before any management IP is set.
Why it looks dead when it is not
Adapter missing on site
PA appliances ship with a DB9-to-RJ45 console adapter. Once it is lost, a plain rollover lead into an older laptop serial port will not work — carry a spare RJ45-to-USB serial adapter.
Locked out of the management interface
PAN-OS maintenance mode is reachable from the console during boot, which is often the only way back in when the management plane is unreachable.
Console works but you cannot log in
The console login uses the same administrator credentials as the web UI. If both fail, the recovery path is a factory reset — which is why console access should be verified before an incident, not during one.

Questions people actually ask
- What baud rate does a Palo Alto firewall use?
- 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control, across PA-series appliances and Panorama M-series.
- Does the PA-220 have an RJ45 console port?
- Yes. The included adapter is for connecting to a DB9 serial port on older hardware, not for converting the appliance side.

PlugConsole turns a phone and an OTG serial cable into a browser terminal. Someone on site plugs in, you take the console from anywhere — no client software, no VPN, no drive to site. The settings on this page are built into the field console, so you pick the model and the parameters are already right.
